Donna Grein
Education Consultant
Rural Education Bureau
NM Public Education Dept.

Hello! My name is Donna Grein and I want to serve all of you as Treasurer/Secretary for NCEA. Currently, I am an educational consultant with the New Mexico Public Education Department where I work in the dynamic and transformative Rural Education Bureau. We are starting the fifth year of an exciting initiative to revitalize the rural communities and schools in the state. My responsibilities are to work with a number of organizations devoted to improving educational and economic conditions in New Mexico: the Outdoor Classroom Initiative, Action for Healthy Kids, No Child Left Inside Initiative, and the New Mexico Rural Revitalization Initiative (NMRRI), efforts to address the special needs of our remote and marginalized rural communities.

I hold an undergraduate degree in medical technology, a master’s degree in Occupational Education, and an education specialist degree in Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education. In addition, I serve on the boards for the New Mexico Community Education Association, the Food and Agriculture Policy Council, and the Environmental Education Association of New Mexico. I am the co-chair for the NCEA Rural Revitalization Committee as well as serving on the NCEA Conference Committee for the past two years. Both my husband and I love the outdoors and we have traveled extensively in the United States and Canada in our fifth-wheel RV. Hiking and visiting archaeological sites in the Southwest are among our favorite outdoor activities.

My education, work experiences, and strong belief in the power of community education have prepared me well for the Secretary/Treasurer of the National Community Education Association. Thank you for considering me for this important position.

Peg Pedersen
Community Education Supervisor, St. Louis Public Schools, 1994 - present
NCEA Member, 1994 - present
NCEA Board of Directors, 2004 – 2008

The challenge facing NCEA today can only be seen as an opportunity ripe with potential. As an association of members, we have before us the prospect of creating a new and dynamic organization. Working together using the community education process we can build on our strong past and take NCEA into the future. New technologies and the commitment of each member can move this group in directions not yet imagined. Since I was the person who nominated Laurel, who unexpectedly had to resign, it would be my privilege and in some ways my responsibility to complete her term as she is called to concentrate on serious family concerns.

The Leadership Summit for Organizational Renewal that will take place at the 2009 Annual Conference presents us with an immediate opportunity to begin the renewal process. It has been planned so that the NCEA Board of Directors can engage with former and emerging association leaders to review the past, assess the present and make recommendations to strengthen the future. We will engage together in the Community Education Process. At this Leadership Summit, opportunities will be available for members to identify strategies that provide effective member support and engage in planning that will move the Strategic Plan forward in ways that are meaningful to the membership. And as only community educators can do, we will renew and strengthen old relationships and lay the foundation for new ones.

If elected as the interim Secretary-Treasurer, I commit to working with the Board of Directors and the membership to support effective communication and transparency.
