1) How to Manage Communications in an Out-of-School Time Crisis

A crisis or emergency can happen anytime, any place in school or out …and they don't necessarily occur during normal school hours. If a crisis situation occurs in your program, do you have a plan and the tools to handle communications appropriately and strategically? What steps will you take to manage the developing incident and its impact on students, program participants, their families, and staff? How will you handle the aftermath, that period when we want things to be “normal” again?

This informative and engaging workshop will help you understand the basics of both strategic communications and crisis communications, and provide you with the tools you may need in the likely event you or your program experiences a crisis.

2) Advocate for State and National Policy

Experience the history of national policy with visits to national monuments, learn from the experts in policy affecting your state at national office visits, and learn how to present your message with a capitol hill visit.

  1. Hear directly from the nation's top policy leaders about timely and education reforms such as Race to the Top (RTTA), Full-Service Schools and Reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA);
  2. Explore how these reforms could affect Community Education and the programs that fall under its umbrella;
  3. Take in our nation's historical monuments and chambers while learning firsthand how your state's programs and concerns fit into the emerging educational landscape; and
  4. Experience how you can most effectively be the voice for your students in DC and back home.

3) After School Accreditation Process (ASAP)

Who benefits from attending?

Afterschool Program Directors, Community Education Directors, Foundations and other Funders of Afterschool Programs (including state departments of education and human services) and school/community based and faith based administrators.

Why you should come!

Wondering why to bother with accreditation or what all this talk about self –assessment and continuous improvement?  Spend two days learning how to objectively assess your program, other programs and how accreditation can mean increased revenue and recognition for your afterschool program.  Participants will get hands-on training on what it takes to be an ASAP team member and/or what it means to have your program accredited.  This session includes visit(s) to afterschool programs in the Washington, DC area and several other hands-on learning experiences.

National Committee for Rural Revitalization

presents its FOLLOW-UP forum on March 8th in Washington D.C.

 Revitalizing America’s Rural Communities

The forum this March will move forward action plans to create a national strategy and sustained collaborative process amongst a cross-section of organizations to support a common agenda of rural re-development and sustainability.  The National Community Education Association (NCEA) has offered to mobilize key stakeholders in the fields of education, economic and workforce development, entrepreneurship, energy, health, and community building, to implement innovative strategies to revitalize this crucial part of America.

Leaders from national organizations across the country will gather to share ideas and reach consensus on a program to "revitalize America’s rural communities.”  The scheduled National Forum is, of course, not the first effort to bring people together to discuss rural revitalization. However, we want this meeting to emerge with a national action plan. There are a number of developmental models and programs in rural American communities that address specific aspects of rural revitalization; but what is needed is a comprehensive countrywide approach to holistic rural revitalization.  The Forum, through a collaborate effort, will have as its primary goal the determination of the best model for rural revitalization  and the most effective ways to integrate the model within our rural communities. We will include in this day a decision as to who needs to be part of this collaborative effort, the stakeholders that will be impacted, specific goals and objectives what will be part of the plan, and a process for implementation.

 “The vision of youthEDGE is to create recognition & awareness for youth voice to be included in community leadership, issues and decision making related to our future.”

youthEDGE is asking for your recommendation for a youth to represent  your program to join us as we embark on a new venture to enable young people to become social entrepreneurs and use their voices to make an impact on their community. The major strategy is to create a national network of youth leaders who connect with one another to share ideas and skills on how through educating, demonstrating, guiding and enabling, they can become change agents to make an impact at local, state and national levels.

youthEDGE was created at the NCEA Fall 2009 Conference by the youth in attendance.  They became aware of the need to include their peers in Community Education leadership. This is a wonderful opportunity to include youth from your local community.  This training and experience will be valuable to your program and community.
